Uma Mohan, Principal

“We, as parents or mentors, may not give everything a child wants, but the promise of a good education is always paramount.” Uma Mohan, Principal

As a mother, teacher, and currently a principal, my journey in the industry of education has made me see the development of students through a different lens.

I am Uma Mohan, and I have dedicated my life to understanding what it takes to walk the fine line between nurturing and educating students and children. Starting out as a biology and science teacher, I’ve pursued success as an educator and was Intel’s Science Teacher of the Year in 2003.

Also, I cherish the moment when I was felicitated by Dr. T. V. Ramachandra of the ecological department at IISc. Bangalore during the lake symposium. Since then, I’ve only trudged my own path and invested my experience in structuring regimes and holistic cultures in many emerging institutions, like Prince Matriculation, the Presidency, and the Pearson Group of Institutions, to name a few.

Currently, I am the principal of Auro Mirra International School, and I intend to imbue the teachings of Sri Aurobindo with an education system that can inspire and propel the future citizens of this country.

Being a teacher isn’t just about completing chapters from a syllabus; it’s also about individually recognising the unique strengths of children and helping them forge a path to where those talents can be expressed.

I tend to accomplish this by training teachers to communicate positively about the unique path their child can take. I constantly aim to learn and grow as an educator myself. After all, age is not a restriction on learning something new!

So this is me, constantly growing, constantly learning, and constantly teaching!

Your journey has had many momentous milestones. Could you tell us about the life-changing milestones that have moulded you into what you are today?

I do not remember any great life-changing moments. I did go through a roller coaster ride with the usual ups and downs. Each and every experience that life has offered has made me grow from strength to strength.

What are the setbacks you have faced? How did you tackle these setbacks or challenges? And what lesson have you learned from it?

Setbacks ??? I do not remember them either. May be because I am quite an optimist.

When you look back, what are the three qualities in you that have helped you become what you are today?

Looking back, I can say that my ability to work well in a team, have empathy, and be an attentive listener were the three traits that shaped the person I am today.

Who are the people who have been the wind behind your wings?

The people who have been the wind behind my wings are, of course, my parents, my siblings, and their families. The most important person who stood behind me like a pillar and coaxed me to aspire is my husband. Not to miss out on my friends who have been a part of my growth.

Lastly, if there was a quote to define you, what would it be?

A self-made leader who empowers future leaders alike
