Nivedita Basu: As India celebrates Children’s Day, a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru’s deep love for children and his belief in their potential, renowned media personality Nivedita Basu takes a moment to reflect on her own childhood memories, the journey that led her into the world of media, and the valuable life lessons she hopes to pass on to the next generation. TheGlitz reports.

Nivedita Basu’s Memories of Children’s Day

Rewinding to her school days, Nivedita fondly recalls, “For us, Children’s Day was all about hearing stories of Chacha Nehru, getting sweets, and basking in the simple joys of childhood. We were so engrossed in our studies that the idea of a career in media was far from our minds.” The path that led Nivedita into media was neither planned nor anticipated, but in hindsight, it feels like fate had a hand in guiding her there. “We never even considered media as a career option,” she admits. “But life has a way of surprising you. It feels like destiny led me into this world, and now, I’m grateful for every moment of it.”

The values instilled in Nivedita by her parents played a pivotal role in shaping her character. “My father was very strict, especially about the smallest details. At the time, I didn’t appreciate it, but now I realize how important that discipline was. It taught me to focus, to work hard, and to always strive for the best.” Looking back, Nivedita acknowledges the impact her father’s discipline has had on her career and life choices. “I hope my children also carry forward that sense of discipline and resilience. It’s a foundation that will serve them well in whatever path they choose.”

Today, as the media landscape continues to evolve, Nivedita reflects on the shifting dynamics of childhood. “Children today are exposed to so much media, and their independent thinking often contrasts with the way we grew up. We were very much influenced by our parents and teachers. Now, the internet and social media give young people an immense sense of freedom and exposure to new ideas.” Despite these changes, she remains grounded in the belief that some core values remain timeless. “Even though the world is different, the fundamental values of respect, discipline, and humility are still essential. It’s these qualities that help children navigate the complexities of modern life.”

When asked about her views on children choosing careers in diverse fields, Nivedita is supportive but practical. “The world has changed so much, and children today are more inclined to explore creative professions—whether it’s acting, music, or art. I think it’s wonderful when children are passionate about something and follow their dreams.” However, she emphasizes the importance of guidance and careful decision-making. “While it’s essential to let children explore their passions, it’s equally important to ensure they are making thoughtful, informed choices. It’s not about following the crowd, but about finding what truly resonates with them and excelling in that area.”

As a mother herself, Nivedita reflects on the lessons she learned growing up—humility, hard work, and perseverance. “Humility is one lesson that I hold close to my heart, no matter where life takes me. It’s something that should never be abandoned, no matter how successful you become.” For Nivedita, it’s the ability to stay grounded in the face of success that matters most.

Looking back at her own personal growth, Nivedita shares a deeper insight into how her understanding of wellness has evolved. “When I was younger, I wish I had been more calm, perhaps through practices like yoga or meditation. Mental health wasn’t something we discussed, and yoga wasn’t a part of our school curriculum. But today, I realize how valuable these practices are for maintaining inner peace.” She believes that yoga, meditation, and mental wellness should be integral parts of the education system for young people. “It’s so important for children to learn how to manage stress, stay calm, and take care of their mental health. I think that’s one of the most important lessons we can give the next generation.”

As Nivedita shares her wisdom and experiences, it’s clear that her journey has been shaped by the values of discipline, humility, and resilience that she cherishes. Her reflections on childhood, career, and personal growth not only highlight the importance of staying grounded but also shed light on the vital role that emotional and mental well-being play in leading a balanced, successful life.
