In a bold blend of coffee beans and eco-consciousness, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) is brewing up more than just a morning cup of joe. Through their ‘Curiosity Fuel’ initiative, the automotive giant has traded in traditional supply chains for a direct connection with family-owned coffee farms in Coorg, Karnataka. And the result? A unique partnership that’s steaming hot with sustainable innovation, community empowerment, and a dash of Indian pride—perfectly aligning with India’s ‘Make-in-India’ mission. TheGlitz reports…

Let’s spill the beans

Škoda

India, the world’s eighth-largest coffee producer, exports an impressive USD 1.25 billion worth of coffee each year. So, it’s only natural that Škoda, whose headquarters in the Czech Republic guzzle down 25 tonnes of coffee annually, would find a perfect match in India’s rich coffee heritage. But this isn’t just about satisfying caffeine cravings—it’s about reshaping the entire supply chain. By cutting out middlemen and working directly with local farmers in Coorg, the company ensures that every sip is not only rich in flavor but steeped in fair trade practices, certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

But the sustainability journey doesn’t end at the bottom of the cup. Coffee bean husks, a by-product typically tossed aside, are being reimagined as a key ingredient in tanning leather seats for Škoda’s Kodiaq and Octavia models. Yes, you read that right—those coffee grounds are driving eco-friendly leather production, proving that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s integrated into the very fabric (or leather, in this case) of their vehicles. The circular economy, meet your new favorite brew.

Škoda

Škoda’s ‘Curiosity Fuel’ initiative isn’t just a caffeine fix—it’s a fresh way of thinking about sustainability. Specially curated for Škoda Auto a.s. employees in the Czech Republic, this exclusive coffee blend is roasted, packaged, and sourced in a way that’s gentle on the environment and supportive of the farmers who grow it. Think of it as a jolt of inspiration that aligns with Škoda’s Strategy 2030, which focuses on blending innovation with eco-friendly practices to drive both creativity and progress.

Karsten Schnake, Board Member for Procurement at Škoda Auto a.s., sums it up best: “Our ‘Curiosity Fuel’ initiative highlights Škoda Auto’s commitment to innovative sustainability by integrating social, environmental, and circular economy principles into our supply chain. From ethically sourced coffee for our employees to utilizing coffee byproducts in our vehicles, we’re setting new sustainability standards in the automotive sector.”

Meanwhile, on home turf, Piyush Arora, Managing Director & CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, adds a shot of community spirit: “Our ‘Curiosity Fuel’ project demonstrates Škoda Auto Volkswagen India’s commitment to holistic sustainability. By bridging the gap between Coorg’s coffee planters and our global operations, we’re fostering community development. This initiative exemplifies our belief that true progress in the automotive sector must encompass environmental responsibility and community empowerment.”

By connecting the dots between agriculture and automotive innovation, the company is showing the world that sustainability is more than just a trend—it’s a way of life. And as they help Coorg’s coffee planters reach European markets, they’re proving that luxury and responsibility can go hand in hand.

So next time you sip your morning brew, remember: Škoda isn’t just fueling their employees’ curiosity—they’re empowering an entire community while they’re at it. Sustainable development has never tasted this good.
