Is it Skean? Is it a skirt? Is it Jeans?

Fashion has always had a weakness for a little sartorial identity crisis. Trousers flirt with skirts, shirts moonlight as dresses, corsets escape the boudoir to become outerwear — and now, jeans have apparently decided that being just jeans is far too predictable. Enter the skean: the wonderfully weird, deliciously hybrid love child of a skirt and a jean.

Part denim rebel, part swishy skirt, part fashion plot twist, it is what happens when two wardrobe staples collide and refuse to choose sides. And while skirt-over-trouser layering has been enjoying its rebellious little moment for decades, TheGlitz thinks the skean takes that sartorial flirtation one delicious step further — stitching this unlikely romance into one gloriously mischievous, fashion-forward garment.

Rihanna Gives ‘Skean’ Denim a Plot Twist

Naturally, it took Rihanna to make the fashion world stop scrolling. Stepping out in Paris this week, the ultimate sartorial provocateur wore light-wash jeans that looked perfectly conventional from one side — until a dramatically long, floor-skimming denim panel emerged from the other, creating an asymmetric, half-skirt silhouette. She kept the rest of the look deliberately unfussy: a black hoodie, Dior bag and snakeskin Miu Miu trainers. The effect? Nonchalant, eccentric and wonderfully RiRi.

British Vogue christened the hybrid the “skean”, and frankly, we rather love it. It has the cheekiness of a fashion invention and the slightly Frankensteinian charm of something that shouldn’t work — but somehow does.

The Skirt-Over-Jeans Story Isn’t New

Before Rihanna gave it a new name, celebrities had already been playing with the deliciously awkward combination. Priyanka Chopra Jonas was photographed in a hybrid ripped-jeans-and-mini-skirt design years ago, proving that Indian celebrity fashion was already well ahead of this particular curve.

Alia Bhatt has also flirted with the skirt-over-jeans aesthetic, notably in a playful Simone Rocha x Karu Research ensemble, while on the international fashion circuit, Bella Hadid has championed the effortlessly cool skirt-over-denim look. Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and Jennifer Lawrence, too, have embraced the wider “skant” revival — proving that the once-unlikely marriage of skirts and trousers is having a decidedly fashionable second act.

So perhaps the skean isn’t arriving out of nowhere. It is simply taking the old rebellious layering trick and stitching it together.

Why Is Suddenly Having a Fashion Identity Crisis

For decades, jeans have represented practicality, rebellion and effortless everyday dressing. But Fall 2026 is asking denim to be considerably more theatrical. Designers are twisting, draping, embellishing and reconstructing the familiar fabric: Diesel has played with denim briefs, A.W.A.K.E. Mode with backwards jean shirt-dresses, while Stella McCartney has taken denim into more decorative territory.

The skean belongs perfectly in this wonderfully unruly movement. It takes the hard, utilitarian language of denim and introduces something softer, swishier and more dramatic.

How to Wear the Skean Without Looking Like Fashion Ate You

The trick is restraint. Let the bottom half have its delicious little meltdown while everything else remains polished.

Think crisp white shirts, cropped bombers, fitted knits, oversized blazers or simple black hoodies. Sneakers make the look streetwise; pointed boots give it a sharper, fashion-editor edge. If you’re not ready for Rihanna-level commitment, layer a mini or midi skirt over relaxed jeans — the softer entry point into the trend.

TheGlitz Fashion Verdict: Skean Or Denim Dérive

We’re calling this gorgeous one Denim Dérive — a delicious little detour from conventional denim dressing… Skean!

The skean may be eccentric, impractical and slightly bonkers. That is precisely its charm. Fashion doesn’t always need to solve a problem; sometimes it simply needs to make us look twice.

And when jeans suddenly decide they want to be a skirt too? We say let them have their moment.
