Over to Pooja C. Pherwani

Your journey has had many momentous milestones. Could you tell us about the life-changing milestones that have molded you to be what you are today?

My professional journey can be encapsulated in one word: agility. Transitioning from a career in Biotechnology to roles centered around marketing, sales, and partnerships, I’ve found my niche in the world of luxury. Adaptability, facing new challenges, exploring diverse opportunities, and achieving success across various domains have been the hallmark of my career evolution.

Significant milestones have marked my journey, particularly during my tenure with global companies. Beginning at Gold’s Gym, I had the privilege of learning from mentors and colleagues, an experience that laid the foundation for my career trajectory. One notable achievement was spearheading the establishment of a new division within my initial company, a task that presented challenges but also abundant learning opportunities.

At the age of 27, I found myself leading a team of 10, a transformative experience that demanded a steep learning curve. Originating from a business-oriented family, my journey began from scratch, immersing myself in the intricacies of the corporate setup. This experience significantly honed my management skills, deepening my comprehension of organizational dynamics.

A lot of my initial experience involved becoming comfortable with unfamiliar territories, particularly in areas typically second nature to those with business management backgrounds. Embracing the challenge, I immersed myself in on-the-job learning experiences. My curious mindset propelled me to learn beyond immediate responsibilities, gaining proficiency across various organizational functions.
In essence, my journey unfolds as a narrative of adaptability, growth, and continuous learning. It’s characterized by seizing opportunities, overcoming challenges, and embracing the dynamic landscape of the luxury industry.

What are the setbacks you have faced? How did you tackle these setbacks or challenges? And what lesson have you learned from it?

At Vogue, I was among the first hires without prior media experience, a challenge I embraced. Initially daunting, the experience proved incredibly valuable, offering insight into the luxury market. Fostering client relationships and discerning each client’s objectives, at times putting on a problem-solving hat, was pivotal to my role. Despite the unfamiliar terrain, I successfully negotiated numerous significant deals, emerging as a key contributor to the company’s revenue. These achievements not only bolstered my confidence but also reaffirmed my belief in the ability to confront challenges head-on and thrive.

Throughout my journey, I’ve believed in learning from colleagues, a trait evident even in my recent role at the Natural Diamond Council, overseeing the India and Middle East regions. This openness has enabled me to form successful relationships and grow, affirming the value of curiosity and collaboration in every endeavor.

When you look back, what are the three qualities in you that have helped you become what you are today?

Reflecting on my journey, agility, adaptability, and persistence stand out as my defining qualities. Agility has enabled me to adeptly navigate diverse challenges and environments. Adaptability has proven invaluable, particularly when transitioning into newer categories. Through persistence, I’ve surmounted obstacles and leveraged past experiences effectively.

These qualities have been instrumental in my growth and success. They form the backbone of my professional ethos.

Who are the people who have been the wind behind your wings?

The journey I’ve embarked upon wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support and guidance of certain individuals. Mr. G Ramachandran, from my days at Gold’s Gym, laid the groundwork for my professional growth. Dilshad Arora, Puja Bilimoria, and Gulshan Advani, esteemed colleagues from my tenure at Vogue India, have been instrumental in shaping my perspective and skills in the luxury domain. Richa Singh, a trusted mentor at the Natural Diamond Council, has provided invaluable insights and encouragement. Lastly, I owe a debt of gratitude to my peers across all companies, whose collective support has enriched my professional journey.

Lastly, if there was a quote to define you, what would it be?

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” – Alan Watts
