From its quaint streets to its grand fortresses, Novi Sad is where every corner tells a stylish story waiting to be discovered.

When I visited this charming city, I was swept away by its vibrant energy, the warmth of its people, and the delightful blend of the old and new. Novi Sad may not be as famous as Belgrade, but its laid-back charm, rich history, and undeniable beauty make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience Serbia’s soul in a unique way.

Getting There: A Scenic Journey

Getting to Novi Sad is as much a part of the adventure as exploring the city itself. If you’re flying in from abroad, you’ll likely land at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which is about an hour away from Novi Sad by car or bus. I travelled by car though many opt for the bus, which departs regularly from Belgrade’s central bus station and takes you through the beautiful Serbian countryside.

For a more scenic journey, take the train from Belgrade to Novi Sad. It’s a short, comfortable ride of around an hour and a half, and the views of the rolling hills and farmlands along the way make it a delightful experience.

If you’re renting a car, driving from Belgrade is easy, as the highways are well-maintained and the drive is straightforward. The city is also well-connected to neighboring countries, making it a perfect stop on a Balkan road trip!

History and Culture: A City of Resilience

Novi Sad’s history is etched in every corner, with influences from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman rule, and its role as a cultural hub during the 19th century. The Petrovaradin Fortress, perched majestically over the Danube, is not only a symbol of the city’s resilience but also offers one of the most stunning panoramic views I’ve ever seen. I remember standing there, gazing out over the river and the city, feeling like I’d stumbled upon a secret that only a few travelers are lucky enough to experience.

The city’s history as a center for Serbian culture and arts is still evident today. Walk along the streets, and you’ll find beautiful Austro-Hungarian architecture and reminders of Novi Sad’s role as a literary and artistic hub. The city was dubbed the “Serbian Athens” in the 19th century for its cultural contributions. It’s home to the Serbian National Theatre, one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country, offering an array of performances from classical theatre to contemporary plays.

What to See: Don’t Miss These Hotspots

Aside from Petrovaradin Fortress, there’s so much to see in Novi Sad. One of my personal favorites is Dunavski Park, a peaceful green oasis where locals come to relax, walk their dogs, or enjoy an afternoon coffee. The park, with its charming ponds and tree-lined paths, is perfect for a lazy afternoon stroll.

If you’re into art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina is a must-visit. Its thought-provoking exhibitions showcase both local and international artists, blending modern art with the city’s deep-rooted cultural heritage. For something truly unique, the Štrand Beach, located along the banks of the Danube, is the perfect spot to cool off in summer, take a dip, or simply relax with a cocktail in hand.

Where to Eat: Culinary Delights of Novi Sad

Food in Novi Sad is nothing short of spectacular. Serbian cuisine, with its hearty portions and bold flavors, left me wanting more after every meal. One dish that stood out to me was ćevapi – grilled minced meat sausages that are a staple in Serbian cuisine. Paired with kajmak (a creamy cheese spread) and ajvar (a pepper-based relish), it was nothing short of mouth-watering.

For a truly unforgettable dining experience, head to Fish & Zelenish, one of the city’s most popular restaurants. The name translates to “Fish & Greens,” and it’s easy to see why: they serve up fresh, locally sourced fish dishes with a creative twist. Another gem is Plava Frajla, where you can indulge in traditional Vojvodinian dishes like sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) and pork ribs.

But don’t skip dessert! At Ice Lab, you’ll find some of the best gelato in town… try their signature rakija-flavored ice cream, a local twist on a classic treat.

Where to Shop: Stylish Finds and Unique Treasures

Novi Sad offers a delightful mix of shopping experiences, from large malls to quaint boutiques filled with unique finds. BIG Shopping Center is a must-visit for those looking to shop at high-end and high-street fashion stores. It’s the city’s largest mall, offering everything from designer clothing to everyday essentials.

However, if you’re seeking something truly special to take home, Dunavska Street is where you want to be. Lined with smaller, independent boutiques, you’ll find handmade jewelry, unique pieces of clothing, and charming souvenirs.

I picked up a beautifully handcrafted Pirot rug, known for its intricate designs and vibrant colors. These traditional Serbian rugs are a true testament to the country’s rich craftsmanship and make for an unforgettable keepsake.

For food lovers, Serbian rakija (a potent fruit brandy) is a popular souvenir. There are numerous shops in the city where you can sample different varieties of rakija, each made from different fruits like plum, apricot, or quince. I grabbed a few bottles for friends back home, and it’s always a hit!

You can also buy handcrafted ceramics and traditional Serbian pottery from local artisans. These beautifully made pieces add a touch of Serbian heritage to any home.

Where To Stay

When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Novi Sad, you’ll be spoiled for choice. For a luxurious experience, I highly recommend Hotel Leopold I at Petrovaradin Fortress. With stunning views of the Danube River and the city below, it offers a perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly yet chic, the pet-friendly Sheraton Novi Sad provides stylish rooms and excellent service, located just a short walk from the city center. For a boutique stay, Boutique Hotel Arta is a hidden gem offering cozy, personalized hospitality in a serene neighborhood.

Film Connection: A City on the Silver Screen

While Novi Sad may not be as well-known as a film destination as Cannes or Hollywood, it has made its mark on the international film scene. Every July, the city hosts the Cinema City International Film Festival, bringing filmmakers, actors, and cinephiles together for screenings of indie films and international hits. It’s a vibrant celebration of cinema, and if you’re lucky enough to be in town during the festival, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. Unfortunately, I missed it but I promised myself that in my next trip, I will make it a point to visit the fest.

The People: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

The people of Novi Sad are what truly make the city shine. They’re a perfect blend of tradition and modernity… fashionable, yet down-to-earth. During my visit, I noticed that the locals love their street style: effortlessly chic, mixing classic pieces with modern trends. Whether it’s sipping coffee at a café or strolling along Zmaj Jovina Street, Novi Sad residents have a way of making everyday life look stylish.
