Over to Manojkumar Sharma, Founder, Ashnam

Ashnam beautifully blends heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design. How do you decide which traditional elements to incorporate into your modern pieces?

At Ashnam, our design philosophy is deeply rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage. When creating modern pieces, we thoughtfully select traditional elements that resonate with our nation’s artistic legacy. This involves extensive research into various art forms, motifs, and symbols that have stood the test of time. We collaborate closely with skilled artisans, ensuring that these traditional aspects are seamlessly integrated into contemporary designs. Our goal is to craft décor items that honour our heritage while appealing to modern sensibilities, creating timeless and relevant pieces.

Your collection primarily focuses on polyresin figurines. What drew you to this material, and what advantages does it offer for home decor?

Polyresin is a remarkable material because it allows us to capture fine details that bring each design to life, giving our products an exclusive and high-quality feel. Unlike other materials, polyresin offers the versatility to mold almost any form, enabling us to experiment with elaborate designs that are otherwise challenging to achieve.Another key advantage is its strength and resilience, making it ideal for home décor items that maintain their beauty over time. It also allows us to create lighter and more affordable pieces without compromising on quality or craftsmanship. This material aligns with our commitment to quality, enabling us to empower local artisans while creating decor items that are as unique as they are durable.

As a brand committed to ‘Make in India,’ how do you ensure that Ashnam’s creations remain true to India’s artistic roots while appealing to global markets?

At Ashnam, our commitment to ‘Make in India’ is at the heart of our operations. We ensure that our creations remain true to India’s artistic roots while appealing to global markets through a thoughtful and purposeful approach. This approach is symbolized in our logo, which represents our deep-rooted connection to nature and our commitment to quality.

We invest heavily in research and development, constantly pushing the boundaries of design and creativity. We create pieces that resonate with domestic and international audiences by blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Our focus on quality over quantity ensures that each product carries the essence of India’s rich cultural heritage, making it appealing to discerning customers worldwide.

Your pieces have the power to transform spaces. Can you share a story about a customer or project where Ashnam’s creations made a particularly impactful change?

We have many interesting stories to share, but the most recent one that stands out is about the unique sea corals we customized for a restaurant. The restaurant’s theme is seafood, and we created beautiful coral reefs specifically for this client. I particularly enjoyed working on this project. Please note that it is unavailable for sale, as it was tailored for a specific need.

With new products added each month, how do you balance innovation and staying true to the core aesthetic of Ashnam? What’s next for the brand in the coming year?

At Ashnam, we strike a careful balance between innovation and our core aesthetic by staying deeply connected to our brand’s essence and our customers’ preferences. Each product is thoughtfully designed to honour the rich cultural heritage that defines Ashnam while embracing a modern sensibility. Looking ahead, our plans are focused on expanding our reach through platforms like Urban Ladder and Pepperfry, making our collections more accessible.

We’re also exploring export opportunities to bring the artistry of Indian craftsmanship to global audiences. Scaling up operations is a priority to cater to a broader market, and, in the long term, we aspire to become a BSE-listed company.
