Aesthetic Treatment

Gen Z’s obsession with aesthetic treatments across the globe is at an all-time high. The anticipated demand has its arrows pointed at beauty standards set by social media and celebrity followers to a good extent and in equal measure. This is because the growing popularity and obsession amongst celebrities has been the hallmark for setting looks and trends on and off the screen. Moreover, the cost trajectory, ease of accessibility, and rise in technology are what are driving the demand.

There is an emphasis on looking good and getting clicked, even better. Body positivity is compromised by common sensibility. Apparently, the demographic shift is weighing more heavily on millennials and Gen X because of their fixation with selfies and self-care. And we are not even touching upon the TikTok fads on Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL, rhinoplasty, liposuction, full-blown implants, and like. Simply treading on ice-thin: Botox, fillers, non-invasive fat reduction, and non-surgical skin-tightening cosmetic procedures in general and as a whole

Circling back to the genesis of cosmetic surgery in particular, during the 6th century BCE, an Indian physician named Sushruta, widely regarded in India as the ‘father of surgery,’ wrote the Sushruta Samhita, documenting scores of surgical procedures. Today, surgeons use skin grafts and various procedures to restore and renew the look in the age of the social media revolution.

Unlike previous generations, millennials are short on time and quick on fixing the not-so-perfect look by adhering to Botox and fillers to make them look more pretty and camera-savvy; they are more apt to undergo procedures so that they stay looking and feeling young for years to come. To boot, studies have proven that cosmetic tweaking does increase one’s self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as the overall satisfaction of life.

TheGlitz caught up with Dr. Ishan Sardesai, an aesthetic practitioner, ENT, and hair transplant surgeon at his newly opened clinic, Face Centre in South Delhi, for a quick chat to delve into his expertise and the general understanding of aesthetic treatment in particular. Edited excerpts from the interview.

TheGlitz: Dr. Ishan, can you give our Glitz readers a hasty run-down of your clinic and what you actually offer there?
Dr. Ishan Sardesai: My clinic is an aesthetic medicine and ENT clinic. We specialise in a wide variety of medical aesthetic treatments such as fillers, threads, Botox, medical facials, and IV glutathione. We have treatments for hair growth and to stop hair loss, and we also provide the option of hair restoration surgery. In addition, we provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic ENT services, along with hearing assessments and speech therapy.

TG: Tell us more about the issues most of your patients experience, Doc.
Dr. IS: Since I specialise in anti-ageing treatments, most of my patients present with concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and dehydrated skin, pigmentation, undereye hollows, and loss of lip volume and definition. I also have a lot of patients who suffer from hair loss and thinning.

TG: And then, we hear those horror stories every day.
Dr. IS: We do hear of some horror stories. These are due to unethical practices and the involvement of unlicensed practitioners. Aesthetic procedures should only be done by trained medical professionals in clean, sterile, and hygienic conditions. I would always encourage people to check the doctor’s qualifications and training before choosing him or her for their cosmetic treatment.

“Cosmetic enhancements in today’s times aren’t just about self-glory; they define success.”

TG: What products and brands do you use on your own skin daily?
Dr. IS: I use the IS clinical cleansing complex twice a day. I use IS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum in the morning and IS Clinical Active Serum at night. A few drops of each are enough. And I use I-Shield G sunscreen, which is spf 50 and also has glutathione.

TG: What is it that you think patients overlook in their planning for their cosmetic surgery procedures?
Dr. IS: Before planning for any cosmetic procedure or surgery, patients should ensure that there is a detailed pre-procedure consultation with the doctor. All doubts regarding the treatment should be cleared before the treatment. Patients should go through the consent form thoroughly.

TG: What’s the best advice you can give to those planning on getting facelifts or fillers?
Dr. IS: The best advice for those opting for fillers or facelifts is to choose a good, qualified surgeon, understand the procedure, and discuss their concerns and expectations with the doctor before deciding to go ahead with the treatment. Also, following the necessary post-procedure instructions is essential to getting the best results!

TG: Thank you Dr. Ishan for your time.

Ultimately, the decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure, whether non-surgical or surgical, is a personal prerogative.
