Can women become great mountaineers? Actor Gayatri Mohanty, a renowned fitness coach and mountaineer, says an emphatic, ‘yes’! Gayatri has sashayed for multiple fashion shows – her modeling talent has been recognized at various beauty pageants, including Mrs. India Global Universe (2019), and Mrs. Dazzling Diva (2019). She has also won the Mrs. Karnataka title and the Best Body Award 2019. But more than the beauty pageants, Gayatri is also a passionate mountaineer. She has climbed three mountain summits, including the Chadar trek in Ladakh, Nagar Shankh, and Kala Patthar, along with Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak, to name a few. It is a difficult sport that requires training and practice, but it can be a spiritual and rewarding experience.

Women are just as capable as men in mountaineering and more and more women are now participating in it. This is because of the physical and mental benefits one can achieve while, mountaineering. Moreover, it also helps align self-awareness and connect with yourself on a deeper level. If you’re a woman who wants to start mountaineering, here are 5 important tips to keep in mind.

  1. Educate yourself on necessary mountaineering techniques.
    Before starting a mountaineering trip, it is essential to possess a strong base of knowledge and skills. This includes mastering fundamental techniques such as handling ropes, using an ice axe, and attaching crampons. Additionally, researching the location and its weather conditions beforehand will help you plan and prepare effectively.
  2. Seek guidance by finding a mentor or taking a course.
    Connecting with experienced mountaineers through a mentor, club, or course can offer valuable support, guidance, and a sense of community. By gaining knowledge and advice on everything from training to equipment selection, beginners can avoid mistakes and stay safe. Additionally, taking a course or joining a guided trip provides the opportunity to gain experience and learn new skills in a controlled and secure setting.
  3. Develop a robust physical fitness foundation.
    To be successful in mountaineering, it is crucial to have a strong and fit body. This can be achieved by focusing on physical training such as running, cycling, and weightlifting to increase strength and endurance.
  4. Acquire high-quality gear.
    Having suitable gear is crucial for a successful and secure mountaineering experience. It’s important to invest in high-quality equipment such as hiking boots, crampons, and an ice axe, and to keep them well-maintained and in good condition.
  5. Prioritize personal sanitation.
    When planning a mountaineering trip, it’s important for women to take into consideration the potential overlap with their menstrual cycles. Since bathrooms and clean running water can be limited while mountaineering, it’s crucial to bring along any necessary medications, as well as plenty of toilet paper and anti-bacterial wipes. While it’s possible to go mountaineering while menstruating, it’s best to avoid scheduling trips during this time as the body may be more vulnerable and in need of extra care.
