Anil Parashar, Chairman of the Tourism and Hospitality Committee, PHDCCI, talks to Sumita Chakraborty, Editor-in-chief, TheGlitz, about the resurgence of solo travel and more.

Mr Parashar, what factors do you believe have contributed to the recent surge in solo travel?

The recent pandemic has given a big fillip to solo travel. On one side, travellers want to avoid too many people for the fear of catching infections or any virus; on the other hand, they don’t want to wait for others to be ready for travel. Solo travellers want to enjoy adventure and freedom and also challenge themselves. Solo travellers also look forward to meeting new people and making new connections.

Are there any specific demographics or age groups that are driving the rise in solo travel?

While 10-12 percent of solo travellers are in the age group of 18-24, according to a survey, the ideal age for solo travellers is 47 with 85 percent of this being women. Some countries are even offering special packages for retirees to travel solo.

What safety considerations should solo travelers keep in mind when embarking on a trip alone?

  • Choose a country that has a high degree of law and order like South Korea, Japan, Dubai or Singapore.
  • The solo traveller must take precautions on social media and not divulge personal information.
  • They must be alert and careful while consuming alcohol and related vices.
  • When travelling in local transport, they must provide their location map to someone they trust.
  • They should take medical insurance, keep their valuables safe and stay in a safe area.

Solo Travel, Freedom& Adventure

In a world that often feels increasingly interconnected yet simultaneously fragmented, the rise of the solo traveler offers a beacon of hope and inspiration. Indeed the true essence of travel lies not in the destinations we visit or the landmarks we photograph, but in the experiences we share and the connections we cultivate along the way. As more and more people embrace the spirit of adventure, independence, and self-discovery, the solo traveller stands as a testament to the transformative power of travel to enrich lives, broaden horizons, and unite in shared humanity.

Break Barriers:

The rise of the solo traveler is emblematic of a broader cultural shift towards individualism and self-expression. In an era defined by social media and digital connectivity, people are increasingly seeking authentic experiences that allow them to break free from the constraints of everyday life and discover the world on their own terms. Whether it’s backpacking through Europe, volunteering in a remote village, or embarking on a solo road trip, solo travelers are rewriting the rules of travel and embracing the unknown with open arms.

Empower Through Exploration:

For many solo travelers, the decision to embark on a journey alone is not just about visiting new places; it’s about embarking on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Freed from the expectations and obligations of companionship, solo travelers have the opportunity to push their boundaries, challenge their assumptions, and forge a deeper connection with themselves and the world around them. From navigating foreign cities to overcoming language barriers, each experience becomes a lesson in resilience, adaptability, and self-reliance.

Cultivate Connections:

Contrary to popular belief, solo travel is not synonymous with isolation or loneliness. On the contrary, many solo travelers find that their journey brings them closer to others, fostering connections and friendships that transcend cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler at a hostel, sharing a meal with a local family, or participating in a community event, solo travelers have countless opportunities to connect with people from all walks of life and share in the richness of human experience.

Embracing the Unknown:

Perhaps the most exhilarating aspect of solo travel is the sense of freedom and possibility that it offers. With no itinerary to follow or agenda to adhere to, solo travelers are free to follow their instincts, embrace spontaneity, and let their curiosity be their guide. From stumbling upon hidden gems off the beaten path to immersing themselves in unfamiliar cultures and traditions, solo travelers revel in the joy of discovery and the thrill of the unknown.
