The Sommeliers Association of India

The Sommeliers Association of India (SAI) achieved a defining moment in the country’s wine history by launching its first internationally recognized competition in partnership with the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI). This ground-breaking initiative not only elevates India’s standing in the global wine community but also paves the way for a new generation of wine connoisseurs to showcase their expertise on an international platform.
This watershed moment comes at a time when India’s beverage landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation. From exclusive wine bars in metropolitan cities to rising interest in craft beverages across tier-two towns, the country’s thirst for refined drinking experiences has never been more apparent.
The competition, held at the landmark The Lalit Mumbai, drew the finest sommeliers from across the country, culminating in an intense finale that showcased exceptional talent and expertise. After rigorous rounds of blind tastings, service challenges, and theoretical assessments, the winners emerged as true ambassadors of India’s growing wine culture.
The competition represents more than just a test of wine knowledge—it’s a gateway for Indian sommeliers to step onto the global stage. Winners will receive specialized training from award-winning experts, preparing them for prestigious international competitions like the Best Sommelier of Asia & Pacific and the Best Sommelier of the World.
At the helm of this initiative are Amrita Singh, co-founder & president of the Sommeliers Association of India, and Mattia Antonio Cianca, co-founder & vice president of the Sommeliers Association of India, whose vision extends beyond organizing competitions. These attributes are critical because sommeliers are not only experts in their field but also ambassadors of wine culture.
They must possess the ability to communicate effectively, engage with diverse audiences, and create memorable experiences for guests. These qualities ensure that sommeliers contribute meaningfully to the dining experience, foster greater appreciation for wine, and uphold the profession’s reputation for excellence and elegance.
