Over to Neha Sampat
Your journey has had many momentous milestones. Could you tell us about the life-changing milestones that have moulded you to be what you are today?
Life-Changing Milestones: My journey has been anything but conventional. I’ve often gone against the grain of traditional tech startups. I’m a CEO without an engineering background, but I’ve founded multiple tech companies. Some milestones include: 1) Transitioning from running a PR firm to becoming a product manager at a large tech firm; 2) Building Raw Engineering to help technical and business users with digital transformation; 3) Creating Built.io and selling it to Software AG; and 4) leading Contentstack as its CEO. Each step was a leap of faith, teaching me the power of resilience, innovation, and determination.
What are the setbacks you have faced? How did you tackle these setbacks or challenges? And what lesson have you learned from it?
Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, the path has been far from smooth. I’ve encountered numerous challenges, particularly in the initial stages. Securing adequate funding and ensuring sufficient runway to develop and expand my businesses were formidable hurdles. Setbacks weren’t confined to financial aspects alone; they also arose from less-than-ideal hiring decisions, reflecting the critical importance of assembling the right team.
Moreover, external factors, such as the unpredictability of market conditions and unprecedented global events like the pandemic, have posed significant challenges. These experiences underscored the importance of adaptability and resilience. In facing these obstacles, I’ve learned to concentrate on elements within my grasp, strategically navigating through adversities by charting a course toward overcoming these hurdles.
I’ve learned to be resilient. Resilience, for me, is about maintaining belief in our mission and vision, especially when the going gets tough. It’s about leading by example, showing the way forward, and instilling confidence in our team that together we can emerge stronger on the other side of any challenge.
When you look back, what are the three qualities in you that have helped you become what you are today?
As I look back on the path that has led me to where I am today, I identify three core qualities that have been instrumental in my journey:
Humility: In every success I’ve achieved, staying grounded has been pivotal. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but I’ve found that maintaining a humble approach and a constant desire to learn and improve is fundamental for sustained growth and success. This humility has fostered an environment where I and those around me can continuously evolve and excel.
Resilience: The entrepreneurial path is fraught with challenges and setbacks. My commitment to pushing through difficult situations, learning from failures, and making necessary adjustments has been crucial. This resilience has not only helped me overcome immediate obstacles but has also taught me invaluable lessons that have shaped my approach to business and leadership.
Optimism: Belief is a powerful tool. My optimism about my capabilities, my team, and the value of our product has been a driving force in challenging the status quo and striving to make a meaningful impact. This positive outlook has enabled us to navigate uncertainties and maintain our focus on our long-term vision, even when faced with immediate hurdles.
Who are the people who have been the wind behind your wings?
Achieving success is a collaborative effort supported by a diverse group I consider my ‘personal board of directors.’ This group includes insightful mentors, skilled executive coaches, empathetic industry peers, strategic investors, and a committed team. Each has played a crucial role in my development and achievements. Mentors offered wisdom, coaches shaped my leadership, peers provided solidarity, investors brought resources and strategic insights, and my team was the foundation of our success. Together, they have been the wind beneath my wings, integral to every milestone we’ve achieved. My gratitude for their support is boundless, as our shared success is a testament to our collective effort and mutual respect.
Lastly, if there was a quote to define you, what would it be?
This quote encapsulates my core belief and approach towards both my personal and professional life: ‘If it were easy, anybody would do it — but we’re not just anybody.’ It reflects my commitment to embracing challenges, acknowledging that the path less travelled often involves difficulties and complexities that many may shy away from. My inclination towards tackling hard things head-on isn’t just about problem-solving; it’s a testament to learning, growth, and resilience. Every challenge encountered and every failure experienced is a stepping stone, an invaluable lesson that shapes wisdom and character. This quote signifies that in the face of adversity, I choose perseverance, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and striving for excellence.
