Priyadarshini Krishnan is the founder of ROOT and SOIL, India’s premier organic baby care brand, offering a comprehensive range of 100% organic products meticulously crafted without the use of sulphur. Priyadarshini Krishnan is a strong advocate for the potency of nature and holds certification as a ‘Newborn Care Specialist’ from a prestigious academy in Washington.

Her profound connection to nature’s intricacies since childhood has driven her to integrate its principles into her lifestyle. Bolstered by her unwavering faith in nature’s ability to heal, Priyadarshini launched her Natural Health Product Store for newborn babies and mothers, offering a comprehensive array of organic products best formulated for both babies and mothers.

Her conviction in the power of nature was further amplified following the natural birth of her daughter, where she experienced first-hand the profound harmony with nature’s design. These pivotal moments inspired the establishment of ROOT and SOIL in July 2019, born out of the real-life challenges faced by mothers.

The brand has since grown into a thriving community of nearly 50,000 parents, boasting a remarkable customer retention rate exceeding 50%. ROOT and SOIL endeavours to address the worries of new parents by blending the therapeutic qualities of nature with traditional evidence-based knowledge in baby care.

Recognising the struggles faced by parents and the crucial need for extensive support for both newborns and mothers, Priyadarshini is committed to providing a nurturing community and assistance to every parent. With a focus on meeting the diverse needs of new parents and drawing upon extensive research into traditional baby care practices, Priyadarshini is dedicated to ensuring that ROOT and SOIL reach as many families as possible, delivering unparalleled care for their little ones. Your journey has had many momentous milestones. Could you tell us about the life-changing milestones that have moulded you into what you are today?

My life has been significantly impacted by the transformative experiences of witnessing the natural births of my two daughters. Undoubtedly, these events have permanently altered my perspective on life. I have never been so grateful before!

What are the setbacks you have faced? How did you tackle these setbacks or challenges? And what lesson have you learned from it?

In the entrepreneurial journey, encountering setbacks and challenges on a daily basis is commonplace. However, one of the most persistent challenges has been ensuring the consistent quality of our products, which are meticulously crafted by hand using fresh ingredients. The inherent variability of raw materials, which fluctuate with each season, necessitated a period of adaptation to grasp their nuances.

Compounded by the organic nature of our products, maintaining consistency posed a formidable obstacle, particularly as we catered to diverse climates across different regions of India. For instance, the shipping of our body butter to Rajasthan resulted in its melting, while transportation to Bangalore caused it to harden significantly. Our approach to addressing this issue involved proactively educating consumers about the underlying reasons behind such occurrences. Remarkably, when we transparently communicated these facts, our customers demonstrated understanding and acceptance, contributing to the mitigation of concerns.

When you look back, what are the three qualities in you that have helped you become what you are today?

Consistency stands as a paramount virtue, often demanding great endurance. It serves as the driving force that compels one to persist and fulfil obligations day after day.

Adopting a logical approach and fostering empathy are equally indispensable. A logical mindset enables clear, rational decision-making, while empathy cultivates understanding and connection with others, both of which are essential elements in navigating challenges and fostering success.

Who are the people who have been the wind behind your wings?

My spouse, children, parents, and in-laws.

Lastly, if there was a quote to define you, what would it be?

“Build your business success around something that you love—something that is inherently and endlessly interesting to you.” Martha Stewart
