Rohit Bal

The world of fashion dimmed tragically today as we bid a heart-wrenching farewell to one of its brightest stars, Rohit Bal, who left us too soon at the age of 63. Just two weeks ago, the fash frat were lauding his fabulous comeback after a hiatus. And the fashion world heralded their fave “prodigal” son.

Rohit Bal: A Life Well Lived

Rohit Bal had wrestled a checkered life replete with triumphs and adversities. For those of us fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him, the loss feels deeply personal—an aching void left by a man who wasn’t just a legendary designer but a soul brimming with warmth, laughter, and an unparalleled humility. Rohit Bal

I remember meeting Rohit in Delhi, his city, where he effortlessly mingled royal grandeur with a childlike curiosity. Over the course of several interviews, what struck me most wasn’t just his impeccable taste or his genius with fabrics, but his infectious sense of humor. He had this rare ability to make you feel at ease instantly, cracking jokes in the middle of serious fashion discussions. Despite his towering presence in the fashion world, Rohit remained grounded, treating everyone he met with kindness and respect, whether you were a Bollywood star or a budding journalist.

Rohit wasn’t just a designer; he was a storyteller. His collections told tales of India’s rich cultural heritage—its regal past, its intricate artistry—woven seamlessly with a modern flair that was uniquely his own. His work has graced some of the world’s most prestigious runways, and his name became synonymous with Indian fashion on the global stage. Yet, beyond the glitz and glamour, Rohit was someone who deeply valued people and relationships. He once told me, during one of our interviews, “Fashion is just what I do. Who I am is in the connections I make with people.”

Celebrities and friends have been quick to share their grief over this unimaginable loss. Priyanka Chopra, who had a close relationship with Rohit, expressed, “I am heartbroken. Rohit was not just a fashion icon, but a friend who had the kind of warmth and charm that could light up any room. His creations made us feel beautiful, but his soul was even more beautiful. Gone far too soon.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar expressed grief through the photo-sharing app Instagram. He posted pictures of himself wearing a breathtaking Rohit Bal sherwani, mentioning how the designer is extra-ordinary talent and what he has done for the fashion world. “I saw Gudda’s collection and show and as always marveled at what a stunning artist, craftsman, and fashion legend he is,” Johar wrote. About him, “This I say with my heart full and present tense for his art and invaluable gift to fashion lives on now and evermore.”

Sonam Kapoor, one of his muses, shared, “It’s difficult to imagine the fashion world without him. Rohit’s designs were pure magic, but what I’ll miss the most is his laugh—his energy that filled up an entire room. He saw beauty in everything and everyone. The loss is unbearable.”

Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a fellow designer, stated, “Rohit had a vision that transcended fashion. He was one of the few who bridged the past with the present so effortlessly. It’s a personal loss for me, as it is for so many of us who were lucky enough to call him a friend.”

Rohit’s legacy, of course, lives on in the breathtaking designs he’s left behind. But for those of us who knew him personally, what we will cherish the most are the moments he shared with us—the spontaneous bursts of laughter, his unfiltered joy for life, and his ability to remind us all that fashion, like life, should be fun and full of heart.

Gone Too Soon

At just 63, Rohit Bal’s departure feels painfully premature. But as the tributes pour in from all over the world, one thing is clear—his impact was immense, and his memory will be eternal. He dressed the stars, but it was Rohit’s spirit that truly shined the brightest. The man who could turn fabric into art, and who could light up a conversation with his witty charm, will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Rohit. Your designs may no longer walk the runway, but your warmth, humor, and humility will forever walk through the hearts of everyone you’ve touched. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
