Meeting Vidya Balan

The first time I had met Vidya was for the cover interview of one of India’s best known women’s magazine – SAVVY magazine, and those covers are no ordinary feat – they’re reserved for women who boldly live life on their own terms, and Vidya was the very epitome of that.

I remember the second I walked into the interview room, I knew I wasn’t just meeting a star – I was in the presence of an incredible actor and a woman who could command attention with a mere glance. Her intelligence, razor-sharp wit, and unshakeable confidence made it clear: this wasn’t just an interview – it was an experience -for Vidya was articulate, intelligent, and utterly fascinating. And to top that, she was incredibly warm and grounded.

At first glance, I remember being struck by her beauty, not just the obvious, film-star kind. It was the beauty of a quintessential Indian woman – timeless, authentic, and deeply rooted. Vidya’s face, glowing with a natural radiance, held a grace that could have easily walked off the canvases of a Raja Ravi Varma painting. And then, there was her smile, one of those gorgeous, heart-stopping smiles that lights up the entire room.

But beyond her stunning features, it was her mind that truly captivated me. Vidya Balan could hold a conversation about anything – politics, cinema, books, life – you name it. She wasn’t just intelligent; she was deeply insightful, with a sharp wit that kept you on your toes. Her knowledge spanned far beyond the silver screen, and her humble demeanor, combined with that infectious sense of humor, made her an absolute delight to talk to.

After that, we did several more cover interviews – most notably the last one for the iconic Stardust Magazine, where I was Editor. And each time we met, my admiration for Vidya Balan only grew. She wasn’t just an actor who portrayed powerful women – she was power, embodied.

Here was someone who had been rejected early on for not fitting into the industry’s narrow definitions of beauty and glamour. But Vidya was too fierce to be boxed in by those limitations. She had something far greater – a belief in her talent, a love for the craft, and an unshakable sense of self.

And that, perhaps, is what makes Vidya Balan so extraordinary. Her career is a testament to her refusal to conform to Bollywood’s expectations. Whether it was her critically acclaimed performance in Parineeta, where she brought a raw and beautiful vulnerability to her character, or her bold portrayal in The Dirty Picture – a role that most actors would hesitate to take on – Vidya has always been unafraid to take risks.

She has always been more than just an actor; she’s a thinker, a doer, someone who throws herself wholeheartedly into her craft. This was evident in how she spoke about her work, her characters, and the larger narrative of women in cinema. She wasn’t just here to make a mark – she was here to change the game. And that she did.

Acing The Filmi Game

Vidya Balan

When Bhool Bhulaiyaa hit the screens, Vidya stunned with her portrayal of Manjulika, the eerie, vengeful spirit who left audiences haunted long after the credits rolled. It wasn’t just a performance; it was an embodiment of the character that made you believe in her every move, her every emotion. Vidya’s portrayal of Manjulika in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 1 was so impactful that it’s no wonder there’s been so much excitement about her return in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. The thought of seeing her as the terrifying, enigmatic Manjulika once again had her fans buzzing with anticipation. And she didn’t disappoint. Her performance was par excellence.

But that’s Vidya for you. Whether it was her unapologetic portrayal of Silk in The Dirty Picture or her nuanced performance in Kahaani, she’s a master of her craft, choosing roles that challenge societal norms and redefine what it means to be a leading lady in Bollywood. She’s not afraid to take risks, and her career is a testament to her fearless pursuit of characters that inspire, entertain, and make us think.

Real Life Hero

But for me, beyond her cinematic achievements, it’s Vidya’s real-life persona that truly captivates. She’s always been unapologetically herself, standing tall in an industry that often tries to put women in boxes. Vidya has shattered Bollywood’s glass ceiling, proving once and for all that you don’t need to conform to its narrow standards of beauty or success. Indeed, she has redefined what it means to be a leading lady in Indian cinema, blazing a trail for those who dare to follow their own path, with talent, confidence, and fearlessness.

In fact, that’s what makes Vidya’s success so special. It isn’t just about the awards, the accolades, or the critical acclaim. It’s about the way she’s paved her own path, inspiring countless women to do the same. She’s never been one to seek validation from others, especially not from an industry that is often cruel to women who don’t fit its mould. Vidya has always been unapologetically herself – and that, in the glamorous world of Bollywood, is a radical act.

As we spoke through the interviews spanning a decade or more, I was left with one lasting impression: Vidya Balan is an icon, not just because of her talent, but because of her mind, her heart, and her soul. She is the rare kind of star who doesn’t just shine on the screen but lights up the world around her with her brilliance, wisdom, and humanity.

Meeting her for all those cover interviews was much more than just a professional encounter – it was a moment of recognition that this was a woman who would continue to inspire, challenge, and break boundaries. Vidya Balan isn’t just a name in Bollywood; she’s a movement, a force, and a beacon for anyone who believes that authenticity is the most beautiful thing of all.
