Fame has a strange relationship with mortality. A crash becomes a question, an overdose becomes a conspiracy, an unexplained detail becomes legend. Princess Diana: The Crash That Stopped the World

Paris, August 31, 1997. Shortly after midnight, a Mercedes carrying Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Al Fayed entered the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. The car crashed into a pillar. Dodi and chauffeur Henri Paul died at the scene; Diana was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

What followed was almost as extraordinary as the tragedy itself.

The world had lost one of its most recognisable women. But almost immediately, questions began to circulate: Was it really an accident? Who was driving? Why were the paparazzi chasing the car? Was Diana pregnant? Was she about to marry Dodi? Was MI6 involved? And what was the mysterious white Fiat Uno reportedly involved in the events immediately before the crash?

For years, those questions turned Diana’s death into perhaps the world’s most famous modern celebrity conspiracy.

The theory that wouldn’t die

The most prominent conspiracy theory came from Mohamed Al Fayed, Dodi’s father, who repeatedly argued that Diana and his son had been deliberately murdered.

His theory was elaborate: Diana was allegedly pregnant with Dodi’s child and the couple were supposedly planning to become engaged. According to the allegation, the British establishment… and particularly MI6… could not allow the mother of a future King of England to marry a Muslim man or have a Muslim child.

It was a theory with all the ingredients of a global thriller: royalty, intelligence agencies, a billionaire family, a forbidden romance and a midnight car crash in Paris.

But there was a fundamental problem. Investigators found no evidence that Diana was pregnant.

Operation Paget, the Metropolitan Police investigation specifically established to examine the conspiracy allegations, reviewed medical, pathological and witness evidence. Its report concluded that there was no evidence supporting pregnancy.

Dodi may have been considering proposing, but that was very different from establishing that an engagement had been arranged—or that Diana was pregnant.

And perhaps that’s one of the strangest things about the Diana story: the absence of evidence became part of the conspiracy narrative itself.

The mysterious white Fiat Uno

Then there was the little white car.

Investigators found evidence that the Mercedes had made contact with another vehicle shortly before the crash. Attention focused on a white Fiat Uno, which became one of the most persistent pieces of the conspiracy mythology.

The question was simple:

Who was driving it?

Conspiracy theories suggested that the car had been deliberately positioned as part of an assassination plan.

French investigators searched for the vehicle, but its driver was never conclusively identified. Operation Paget examined allegations surrounding a white Fiat Uno owned by French photojournalist James Andanson, among others. The report found no evidence establishing that his vehicle had been deliberately used in a conspiracy.

For conspiracy theorists, however, an unidentified car at the scene was irresistible.

The paparazzi: the uncomfortable truth

This is where the established evidence becomes particularly important.

Diana and Dodi were being pursued by photographers as their Mercedes travelled through Paris.

The British inquest eventually returned a verdict of unlawful killing, attributing it to the grossly negligent driving of Henri Paul and the pursuing paparazzi.

That verdict is important because it sits somewhere between the two extreme versions of the story.

It did not establish a secret assassination.

But neither did it simply say:

“Nothing went wrong except an unfortunate accident.”

The jury found that the reckless circumstances surrounding the chase contributed to the deaths.

And that distinction matters.
