The Supercharged Mercedes-Benz 500K is flagged off for the rally

One of the most eagerly anticipated segments of the rally was the Supercharged Class, where the stars of the show were the Kompressor models from the 1920s and 1930s. These stunning pieces of automotive history – like the 500K, 540K, and the engineering marvel that is the 630K – represented the very pinnacle of innovation, power, and style. Never before had such a stellar collection of supercharged icons gathered in one place, making this year’s rally a must-see for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally: A Glimpse of Grandeur: The Superlimousine Class

Then there was the Superlimousine Class, which offered a rare and breathtaking window into Mercedes-Benz’s legacy of opulence. Cars like the Nurburg, 600 Grosser, and the legendary 300 Adenauer turned heads with their imposing presence, evoking an era when luxury knew no bounds. And for those who crave the rarities, the sight of a pristine 1000SEL (V126) was nothing short of mesmerizing, attracting swarms of admirers eager to snap a shot of this rolling monument to extravagance.

2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally: Bruno Sacco: A Tribute to a Visionary

The convoy was led by the 500K & 380SL as the rally rolled down Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Road at Bandra Bandstand

Of course, no rally would be complete without paying homage to the design legends who helped shape the brand. This year’s Bruno Sacco Class honored the Italian genius behind Mercedes-Benz’s most iconic designs. From the first-generation SLK to the legendary G-Wagen and the timeless SEC (C126) S-Class coupe, the class was a celebration of Sacco’s enduring influence on automotive aesthetics – his work proving once again that great design is truly timeless.

2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally: The Road Warriors: Mile Munchers Class

A heartwarming addition to this year’s rally was the Mile Munchers Class, which celebrated the dedication of classic car owners who drove from far-flung corners of India to Mumbai. From Goa and Lucknow to Kochi, Mysore, and Rajkot, these intrepid adventurers embodied the unshakeable bond between man and machine. Among the most striking entrants were the 190 (W201), 240D (W123), and E220 (W124) – each a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s enduring quality and the owners’ unrelenting passion for preserving these automotive treasures.

As Perseus Bandrawalla, Curator of MBCCR, aptly put it, “The MBCCR is a museum on wheels, showcasing everything from the world’s first automobile – the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen (replica) – to the sleek, modern classics like the SLS AMG with its iconic gullwing doors. You can practically see the evolution of automobiles over the last 130 years.”

2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally: Santosh Iyer: A Legacy in Motion

In his address, Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, reflected on the importance of the rally in bridging the gap between past, present, and future. “For over a decade, MBCCR has become the highlight of Mumbai’s winter season, and we’re thrilled to see this event continue to grow and thrive. The legacy of Mercedes-Benz is alive and well, thanks to the passionate community of collectors and restorers who ensure that these iconic cars remain in pristine condition for generations to come.”

A Love Affair with Classics

For Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor of Autocar India, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally is a beacon for India’s growing classic car movement. “It’s the backbone of the classic car movement in India, giving rise to a new generation of collectors and enthusiasts. Autocar India is proud to support such a passionate community.”

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally was a roaring success, cementing its place as the gold standard of classic car events. As the classic car bug continues to spread throughout India, we can only imagine the stunning automotive treasures that will grace next year’s rally – after all, when it comes to Mercedes-Benz, the past is just as exciting as the future.
