The Green Collective, Unplugged!

Sustainability is at the heart of The Green Collective. How do you ensure that every piece you create not only supports local artisans but also contributes to environmental conservation?

The fact that our products are crafted in cane/ rattan automatically makes them an alternative to a more eco-friendly choice. Moreover, the cane that we use is sourced as locally as possible, within the region where our village cluster is based so that the carbon footprint associated with each product is super low.

Besides that, our product packaging supports and ensures environment conservation, as we use brown paper honeycomb instead of plastic bubble wrap and even upcycle cartons to ship our products, thus making our business from product to home as earth-friendly as possible.

The Green Collective

Your cane products are built to last decades, becoming family heirlooms. What makes cane such a suitable material for sustainable home decor, and how do you ensure its long-term durability?

Cane regrows extremely fast, which is what makes it an eco-conscious material in the first place, and since it’s a creeper it needs the support of the forest, especially robust trees to grow, hence incentivizing the caning community to preserve the forest in order to have continued access to this material as a means to earn.

Cane is a material that bends into shape very easily and so the possibilities of designing with this material are endless, and hence it lends itself very well to creating homewares as sustainably and creatively as possible.

To ensure decades of durability, we ensure that our cane is treated well so that it can never be a home to any small insects, and is fully dry once production is complete. Our products are then finished with a coat of clear varnish to resist moisture and also to allow for easy clean-up. This simply elongates the life of the product further.

You’ve designed products that have found homes with celebrities like Rhea Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut. How do you approach creating pieces that resonate with such a discerning clientele?

The secret sauce is always great listening skills – since the time we launched, we had LISTENED carefully – to our intuition when it came to contemporizing traditional designs, to our artisans when it came to trying a fresh approach to never-seen-before designs, and to our customers, to incorporate elements that were relevant to them, into our designs. This has allowed us to have a well-rounded set of products that combine both form and functionality, along with a global aesthetic that has been molded to fit beautifully in a modern Indian home.

The Green Collective’s collection is both beautiful and timeless. How do you find the balance between creating trendy designs and ensuring they will remain relevant and cherished for years to come?

At TGC, we not only like to bring forth creative products to find our place in the homes of collectors and aficionados but also have an omnipresent “Buniyaad” edit, that encompasses a classic approach to our products. This edit was not only our launch edit but also formed the very foundation of our business, over which we have built fresher designs and collections. No wonder, it still remains a bestseller as a collection in its entirety.

The other things we have ensured are:

Obsessive Quality Control – we never sell anything we would not be comfortable with having in our own homes, and so we set the standard very high

Focusing on function as well as form – as a vision, we always wanted our products not only to look pretty but also to have actual use, and we always tried to push for multifunctionality. To us, both aesthetics and a job well done are important

This approach ensures we not only remain on-trend but also timeless and relevant.

Can you tell us about any exciting collaborations or new collections that The Green Collective has in the works? What’s next for the brand as it continues to evolve in the sustainable design space?

As we evolve, the plan is to continue experimenting with fresher materials and newer craft forms. Our love for stainless steel is ongoing so hopefully you will see more of that mash-up. We remain committed to bringing you products that are proudly INDIAN in their entirety.
