Dr. Geetanjali Chopra believed she was destined to be an academician and researcher. After finishing her PhD and securing a job, she was unable to discover 'work happiness'. Perhaps she was destined to start her own NGO, Wishes and Blessings, and lead an organisation with a mission to alter people’s lives.

Your journey had many momentous milestones. Could you tell us about the life-changing milestones that have moulded you to be what you are today?

Looking back, there have been several milestones that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, one of the most life-altering experiences occurred during the peak of my academic career in March 2014, on the occasion of Holi. It was then that I came across a group of visually impaired children who expressed their desire to play Holi. At first, I found myself perplexed by the idea of visually impaired children wanting to engage in a festival that is so visually vibrant and colorful. However, despite my initial hesitation, I decided to fulfil their wish. Little did I know that this decision would profoundly impact my life.

Witnessing the sheer joy and happiness on those children’s faces as they immersed themselves in the festivities was a truly transformative experience. In that moment, I realised the power of inclusivity and the importance of embracing diversity in all its forms. This encounter with the visually impaired children taught me that joy knows no boundaries and that happiness can be found in the most unexpected places.

From that day forward, I embarked on a journey of advocating for inclusivity and accessibility for all individuals, regardless of their abilities or limitations. This experience ignited a fire within me to make a positive difference in the lives of others and to strive for a more inclusive society.

In essence, this life-changing milestone not only altered my perspective but also set me on a path of purpose and fulfillment. It taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and acceptance, qualities that continue to guide me in my personal and professional endeavors. I emerged from that experience with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to making the world a better place for everyone.

What are the setbacks you have faced? How did you tackle these challenges or setbacks? And what lesson have you learned from it?

Transitioning from a well-established career in academics and research to a completely new dimension presented numerous setbacks. Foremost among these was scepticism and concern from loved ones who worried about my lack of experience in the new field. Their raised eyebrows served as a constant reminder of the uncertainty inherent in my decision. However, I tackled these challenges head-on, relying on my determination and self-motivation.

Learning everything anew was daunting, but I embraced it as an opportunity for personal growth. My primary mentors became time and patience as I navigated the unfamiliar territory. Despite facing fears and doubts, I remained steadfast in my decision and refused to dwell on the past. Instead, I focused on moving forward with conviction.

Navigating a new career path also meant addressing a trust deficit, especially concerning donors and beneficiaries. Both parties often approached my transition with scepticism, uncertain about my ability to deliver results in an unfamiliar domain.

One of the key lessons I learned from this experience is the importance of resilience. Adapting to change requires a willingness to confront discomfort and uncertainty. By staying committed to my goals and persevering through challenges, I discovered my capacity for resilience. Additionally, I learned the value of self-reliance and resourcefulness. Without formal guidance, I relied on my initiative to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in my new endeavour.

In hindsight, I realise that setbacks are inevitable in any significant life transition. However, it is our response to these setbacks that ultimately determines our success. By embracing change with an open mind and a willingness to learn, we can overcome obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side.

When you look back, what are the three qualities in you that helped you become what you are today?

When reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as instrumental in shaping who I am today. Firstly, my unwavering spirit of perseverance has been a cornerstone, guiding me through challenges and setbacks with resilience and determination. Secondly, my ability to recognise and appreciate the inherent goodness in people has allowed me to build meaningful connections and foster positive relationships.

Lastly, my steadfast belief in the capacity for growth and improvement in individuals has driven me to continuously strive for personal development and to support others in their journey towards becoming their best selves. These qualities have been pivotal in shaping my path and have enabled me to overcome obstacles, connect with others authentically, and embrace the journey of self-discovery and growth.

Who are the people who have been the wind behind your wings?

My family, comprising my parents, husband, and brother, has been the driving force propelling me forward, supporting me, and lifting me up whenever I needed it. They have been an unwavering source of strength and encouragement, enabling me to soar to new heights and overcome challenges with confidence. Their love, guidance, and unwavering belief in me have been the wind beneath my wings, empowering me to pursue my dreams and achieve success in all aspects of life.

Lastly, if there was a quote to define you, what would it be?

Follow your heart and remember to take your brain with you” encapsulates my essence perfectly. It speaks to the importance of embracing intuition and passion and acknowledging the depth of emotions that guide us. Yet, it also underscores the necessity of rationality and critical thinking in decision-making. It’s a reminder that while our hearts may lead us towards our desires and dreams, it’s our minds that provide the discernment and strategy to navigate life’s complexities. This quote embodies the harmonious balance between emotion and reason, guiding me through life’s journey with clarity and purpose.
