TheGlitzMedia: Smita, your journey into interior design is quite unique, starting with engineering and an MCA before transitioning. Could you tell us more about what sparked that initial fascination with the transformative power of interiors you mentioned?
Smita Nigam: From a young age, I was captivated by how a well-designed space could change the entire mood of a person or a home. Even while pursuing engineering and my MCA, that fascination never left me. I would often find myself rearranging furniture, exploring color palettes, or sketching ideas—purely out of passion. After dedicating time to my family, I realized it was time to bring that long-held dream to life. That’s when I decided to formally study interior design, so I could blend my technical mindset with my creative instincts.
TGM: You founded Dream Home Interior Designer in 2018 with a vision to balance aesthetics and functionality. Could you elaborate on what that balance truly means to you in your design philosophy?
SN: For me, a space should not only look beautiful but also feel effortless to live in. Aesthetic appeal draws you in, but functionality makes you stay. I believe design should support everyday life—whether it’s through smart storage, natural lighting, or flow of movement. Every element we add has to serve a purpose while contributing to the overall visual harmony. That’s the true balance I aim for in each project.
TGM: In your own words, what core problem does your work at Dream Home Interior Designer ultimately solve for your clients?
SN: We solve the gap between what clients imagine and what they actually experience in their homes. Often, people know what they want to feel in a space—comfort, inspiration, calm—but don’t know how to achieve it. That’s where we come in. We translate emotions, needs, and lifestyles into tangible, liveable design. Our work takes away the overwhelm and replaces it with clarity, comfort, and personalized beauty.
TGM: How do you blend your Japanese and Scandinavian design expertise to meet individual client needs?
SN: Japanese and Scandinavian styles both value simplicity, warmth, and natural elements—making them a beautiful foundation to build on. I listen closely to each client’s lifestyle and preferences, then infuse those clean, calming design principles in a way that’s uniquely theirs. Whether it’s minimalist furniture, earthy textures, or serene color palettes, the goal is always to create a space that feels light, grounded, and deeply personal.
TGM: Could you give us a glimpse into a project you are currently working on and what excites you most about it?
SN: We’re currently designing a family home where each member has a completely different taste—from bold industrial for the son to soft Japandi for the parents. What excites me is the challenge of weaving these contrasting styles into one cohesive narrative. It’s an opportunity to showcase how diverse design preferences can coexist beautifully when there’s a thoughtful vision behind them.
TGM: What is one distraction you wish you could eliminate from your work life to enhance your focus and creativity?
SN: Honestly, digital noise. Constant notifications and the pressure of social media updates can sometimes pull me out of my creative flow. I treasure the moments when I can disconnect, immerse myself in a project, and just design with heart and soul—those are the times when my best ideas emerge.
