The KariGhars – Ashita Chadha, Unplugged!

Aashita, your journey from facing design challenges in your own home to co-founding The KariGhars is truly inspiring. What was the turning point that made you and Abhishek decide to leave the IT world and dive into the world of luxury interior design?
It all started with the experience of designing our own home, where we faced numerous challenges—from finding the right design to ensuring quality workmanship. This process made us realize how complex, yet rewarding, interior design could be. The turning point came when we recognized a significant gap in the industry; there was a lack of professionalism and structure, which often led to client frustration.

Quality, timelines, lack of effective communication and no focus on customer experience, were the major gaps we identified. Abhishek and I saw an opportunity to bring our expertise into this space, redefining the process to make it seamless and professional, particularly for clients seeking a blend of luxury, functionality, and uniqueness in their homes.
We felt deeply passionate about creating spaces that reflect our clients’ identities. With our backgrounds in IT, we had a strong foundation in project management and attention to detail, which we knew would serve us well in building a business. This shared vision inspired us to make the leap from IT to interior design, with a mission to establish The KariGhars as a brand synonymous with bespoke luxury, quality and client-centric design.

Starting a luxury interior design firm from scratch is no easy feat, especially in a competitive industry like Bangalore. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in the early days of The KariGhars, and how did you overcome them?
In the early days, we faced significant challenges—starting with no formal industry experience or qualifications, no office, and fewer projects to showcase to clients. Entering a highly competitive market like Bangalore, filled with established interior design firms, meant we had a steep learning curve. Building a name and earning trust felt like an uphill battle, and we found ourselves juggling multiple roles to ensure client satisfaction and exceptional design quality.
To overcome these challenges, we relied on our core values: honesty, customer satisfaction, transparency, and dedication. We focused on delivering consistent, high-quality work and took the time to truly understand each client’s unique needs, providing designs that were both personalized and memorable.

By prioritizing open communication and transparency, we built trust, allowing our reputation to grow organically through word-of-mouth referrals.
Over time, we built a talented, dedicated team who brought fresh creativity to each project, and that’s when The KariGhars truly began to thrive. This journey taught us that a commitment to our values and client-focused approach would be the foundation for our long-term success.

Over the years, The KariGhars has become synonymous with bespoke luxury. How has your personal design philosophy evolved since you first started, and what continues to inspire you creatively as you work on new projects?
When we first started, my design philosophy was centered around creating beautiful, functional spaces, but over the years, it has evolved to emphasize a deeper connection with the client’s personality and lifestyle.

Today, I see design as a medium of storytelling, where each project should reflect the unique journey of the homeowner. This philosophy has allowed me to create homes that feel authentic, comfortable, and luxurious all at once.
What inspires me creatively is constantly exploring new textures, materials, and cultural elements, especially from our rich heritage. Every new project is an opportunity to innovate, drawing on both traditional and contemporary styles to create a timeless look.

Our clients’ evolving tastes and aspirations also fuel my creativity—each project brings a new vision, which makes this journey endlessly exciting.

As a woman entrepreneur, how have you balanced the demands of running a successful business with your personal life? What advice would you give to other women looking to make their mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
Building a business while managing a home and family is no easy task—it demands a lot from women. To succeed, you must be extremely passionate about what you’re creating and have a strong “why” that keeps you going. This clarity and purpose are essential for sustaining the energy needed to balance all these roles.
Another important point is to recognize that we are human, and we can’t expect perfection in every aspect of our lives. Pursuing a business often means accepting that some areas of life might not be exactly as we’d like, and that’s okay.

It’s about prioritizing and knowing which areas we’re willing to compromise on to achieve our larger goals. Striving for perfection in all areas only invites frustration, so it’s essential to focus on progress and be kind to ourselves in the process.
To other women in this industry, I would say—believe in your vision, and don’t be afraid to be assertive. This field can be demanding, but trust in your creativity, knowledge, and resilience.

Establish a strong support system, both professionally and personally, and don’t hesitate to seek out mentors who can provide guidance. Embrace every learning experience, and remember that challenges are a part of the growth journey.

With over a decade in the industry and 6,500 homes transformed, are there any particular projects or milestones that hold a special place in your heart? What makes these moments stand out?
One of the most memorable milestones for me was when we completed our very first project. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, realizing we were building something unique that would leave a lasting impression in our clients’ hearts.

It was the beginning of something truly special—our vision of creating homes that reflect both luxury and individuality.
I also vividly remember receiving a heartfelt review from a client who shared their experience in a community forum. That review sparked a ripple effect, bringing in new clients who had seen or heard about our work.

It was a pivotal moment that reinforced our commitment and set the foundation for our growth. Knowing that our work resonated with people in such a meaningful way gave us the confidence to keep pushing boundaries and raising the bar in every project. This early feedback paved the path forward for us, and it remains a cherished memory and a reminder of why we do what we do.

Looking forward, what are your goals for The KariGhars future, and how do you see both your personal journey and the company evolving in the coming years?
Looking ahead, our goal at The KariGhars is to continue pushing the limits of luxury design while embracing sustainability to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly interiors. Personally, I am excited about mentoring young designers, helping them unlock their creativity and find their voice in this industry.
As part of our growth, we’re setting our sights on Hyderabad, a city rich with potential in the luxury interior design segment. By 2025, we aim to establish ourselves there, bringing our expertise and craftsmanship to meet the unique tastes of Hyderabad’s homeowners.

We’re developing tailored strategies to deliver bespoke, globally-inspired yet locally resonant designs, with the same dedication to quality and client trust that defines us in Bangalore. This expansion represents an exciting new chapter for The KariGhars as we broaden our reach and redefine luxury design in new markets.
